Sensors & Measurement Systems
7th Semester
The learning objective of the course is twofold: On the one hand, to present students with a wide range of sensory instruments and on the other hand, to familiarize them with the processes of receiving the sensor signal and ultimately measuring it with the help of computer techniques and systems.
The course material includes: Basic principles of the measurement process. Accuracy, sensitivity, repeatability. Introduction to sensors as transducers of natural quantities into signals. Kinematic sensors: Displacement, linear velocity, acceleration, angular position, angular velocity. Sensors of intensive quantities: Pressure, force, torque. Flow and level sensors. Measurement of electrical quantities: Voltage, current. Power. Temperature measurement. Range sensors. MEMS sensors. Sensor interface with PC-based measuring systems.
After the course, the student will be able to:
- understand the basic principles of operation of a variety of sensors used in industrial robotics and mechatronic systems.
- be able to select and use the appropriate sensor given the desired application
- to select and use the appropriate adaptation circuits, which may be required, to exploit the information that the sensors output.
- to accurately measure physical quantities, parameters and variables appearing in each application.
Required knowledge: Electronics, Theory and Control Technology.
